Let the record show, however, though it be but a sliver it is fierce. The World’s A Little Blurry, however, opened a door that was previously closed, offering fans a glimpse of what Eilish described as a “sliver” of her life. Compared to the highly publicized personal lives of today’s pop singers, Eilish has kept her own life under wraps. Those of us who have been fans of Eilish for years know she’s always been more private. But Eilish isn’t backing down from these harder-to-face fears, and this is where Happier Than Ever really shines. It can be even harder to acknowledge the ways we’ve been hurt for fear of being judged as weak. Sometimes it’s easier to admit we’re scared of spiders or heights than it is to admit we’re scared of losing interest in our passions or scared our past relationships have broken us. While the internet, namely TikTok, has had a field day criticizing this next chapter of music, her new studio album, though quintessentially Billie Eilish in sound, is unlike her previous work because it veers away from more pedestrian fears in favor of something deeper. Most of Eilish’s body of work thus far deals with fear in some capacity, and Happier Than Ever continues this theme. Since then, she’s debuted blonde hair, donned a very different kind of look on Vogue, and signified the beginning of an era in which she isn’t afraid of vulnerability - arguably the entire point of Happier Than Ever. Officially released last Friday, her much-anticipated sophomore album is the final chapter of a first-hand account she began telling at the start of 2021 with her Apple documentary The World’s A Little Blurry. With Happier Than Ever, Eilish uses her aptitude for storytelling to narrate arguably her most honest story yet: the story of her life. If Eilish buried tidbits of her own personal experience in any of these fictionalized songs, it was never our business, and Eilish mostly kept mum - until now. Over the course of her explosive career, she’s given shape to characters with a variety of perspectives, metaphorized hard-to-talk-about topics like depression and climate change, and brought the worst nightmares to life. Billie Eilish has always been a storyteller.
